Le Va’s drawings were central to his oeuvre in relation to his sculpture; they served as flexible blueprints, or what Le Va called “plan views” to his art. Utilizing an overhead perspective, they reveal a very different intention from the chance operations employed by other artists with whom he is typically classed. This drawing typifies how organized Le Va’s practice was, contrary to the popular assumption that much of his work was completely random. The off-center, contained composition and meticulously placed dots provide a window onto the inner workings of the artist’s mind and the way he thought through his work. The title Within Boundaries further disproves that Le Va always leaned into chance; he conceptualized this piece as chaos to an extent, a planned middle ground between order and speculation.
